Xerath: The Magus Ascendant

Release Date: October 5, 2011

Xerath, the Magus Ascendant, is a powerful mage hailing from the ancient Shuriman empire in the world of League of Legends. With his mastery over arcane energies, Xerath wields immense power, capable of decimating his enemies from afar. His story, abilities, strengths, and weaknesses make him a formidable champion on the Fields of Justice.

Background

Xerath's tale begins in the golden era of Shurima, a once-mighty empire that spanned the vast desert. He was once a mortal mage, serving as a guardian of the Sun Disc, a powerful artifact that channeled the sun's energy to sustain the empire. However, consumed by his insatiable thirst for power, Xerath sought to harness the Sun Disc's energy for himself.

In a treacherous act of betrayal, Xerath attempted to overthrow Azir, the emperor of Shurima, and seize the Sun Disc's power. But his plan backfired, resulting in a cataclysmic explosion that destroyed the empire and transformed Xerath into an ethereal being of pure arcane energy. Bound to his mortal form by ancient magic, Xerath became an eternal prisoner, trapped within his own magical shackles.

Centuries later, Xerath was inadvertently released from his confinement during a Noxian excavation in Shurima. Now free, he seeks to unleash his newfound power upon the world, seeking revenge against those who imprisoned him and reclaiming his place as the Magus Ascendant.

Abilities

Xerath's abilities revolve around his mastery of arcane energy, allowing him to rain destruction upon his enemies from a safe distance. His kit consists of the following:

Passive: Mana Surge

After casting three spells, Xerath's next basic attack restores mana and grants him increased attack speed. This passive encourages Xerath players to weave in basic attacks between spellcasting to maximize their damage output and sustain in prolonged fights.

Q: Arcanopulse

Xerath charges up and fires a long-range skillshot, dealing magic damage to all enemies hit. This ability is Xerath's primary source of poke and wave clear, allowing him to harass opponents from a safe distance and control the battlefield.

W: Eye of Destruction

Xerath conjures an area of magical energy that detonates after a brief delay, dealing damage to all enemies within. This ability provides Xerath with area-of-effect damage, making it useful for clearing minion waves and zoning enemies in team fights.

E: Shocking Orb

Xerath releases an orb of energy that stuns the first enemy hit and deals damage. This ability is crucial for Xerath's survivability, as it provides him with a reliable crowd control tool to fend off assassins or engage in team fights.

R: Rite of the Arcane

Xerath channels for a few seconds, transforming into a stationary state and gaining increased range on his abilities. During this time, he can unleash a barrage of long-range magic missiles, damaging all enemies in a targeted area. Xerath's ultimate ability allows him to unleash devastating long-range artillery strikes, making him a fearsome force in team fights and sieges.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Xerath's strengths lie in his long-range poke, wave clear, and ability to control team fights. His Q ability, Arcanopulse, allows him to harass opponents from a safe distance, making it difficult for enemies to engage on him. Additionally, his ultimate, Rite of the Arcane, provides him with immense burst damage and zoning potential, making him a threat in team fights and sieges.

However, Xerath also has his fair share of weaknesses. His immobility makes him vulnerable to assassins and champions with high mobility. Without proper positioning and vision control, Xerath can easily be caught out and eliminated. Additionally, his reliance on skillshots means that he requires precise aim to maximize his damage output. Missing crucial abilities can significantly reduce his effectiveness in fights.

Xerath's Place in the Game

Xerath is primarily played as a mid-lane mage in League of Legends. His long-range poke and wave clear make him an excellent choice for sieging objectives and controlling the map. Xerath excels in team fights, where he can safely unleash his devastating ultimate, decimating multiple enemies from afar.

His playstyle revolves around positioning and map awareness. Xerath players must maintain a safe distance from their opponents while constantly looking for opportunities to poke and harass. Vision control is crucial for Xerath, as it allows him to spot potential threats and avoid being caught out by assassins or ganks.

With his powerful abilities and strategic playstyle, Xerath offers a unique and satisfying experience for players who enjoy long-range mages and tactical gameplay.

Lore:

Xerath is an Ascended Magus of ancient Shurima, a being of arcane energy writhing in the broken shards of a magical sarcophagus. For millennia, he was trapped beneath the desert sands, but the rise of Shurima freed him from his ancient prison. Driven insane with power, he now seeks to take what he believes is rightfully his and replace the upstart civilizations of the world with one fashioned in his image.

Ally tips:

It's easier to land Arcanopulse on an enemy when they're moving toward or away from you, rather than side to side. Eye of Destruction will make landing Arcanopulse easier as the target will be slowed. If you stun an enemy with Shocking Orb, follow up with a guaranteed center hit on Eye of Destruction.

Enemy tips:

Xerath's range can be intimidating, but most champions who close distance with him can trade favorably.Xerath takes a long time to engage Rite of the Arcane. Watch for his spellcast animation and start dodging.Banshee's Veil will make it much harder for Xerath to land Shocking Orb on you.
